THREE CLAY FORMSWHEEL-THROWN
QUALITY
For me, spending time with clay on the potter’s wheel is a means of craft through physical touch. While the desired end is less about making utilitarian objects and more about exploring forms, the objective is to get my mind away from what’s measurably ‘good’, to focus on what’s beautiful and true.
TOUCH
My daughter was born the week prior to this series being made. The day following her birth, I put the potter’s wheel inside of our house and spent any spare time making with clay. As my hands were often in contact with her fragile new skin, that contact added incomparable beauty to the experience and caused me to reflect on the importance of ‘touch’.
CLAY as the work:
. is used to work on me as much as I’m used to work on it.
. can’t be held too tightly whenever it’s coming into existence.
. demands that perfection is impossible, but presence is imperative.
DESIGN
As they relate to design, these pieces are more about form than function . . . function comes later.
