LIGHFBOXPRODUCT
At the end of 2018, JDS met up with Dr. Lara Pence and Mr. Carey Edmund to discuss a product idea that derived from Dr. Pence and her thriving psychology practice. The initial brief was that the product would be a container carrying cards written by Pence, purchased by individuals to guide them through an extensive, enlightening process of self-exploration.
It was also decided that the product - both cards and box - should be designed as an art object, to pique interest with its mere presence and continue explaining itself upon further experience.
JDS’ scope in the project was to (1) design the product and (2) brand the new business around the product (LIGHFBOX branding to be shown separately).
BOX To withstand continuous handling over a long period of time, the card container is made from heavy-gauge sheets of either brass or steel.
The metal of the box is left raw to develop a patina over time. While expressing the product’s honest process, the patina also grows with touch and forms a visual connection between box and owner. The box’s simple flat planes are meant to clearly exhibit that ever-developing connection.
CARDS The scale and proportions of the cards acted as the origin of the design process. The square cards relate to the human body by being the approximate average size of a person’s palm.
For function and form, each card is cut with an inverted tab. The tabs make it easy to pull the front card forward, and they’re inverted so the stack remains a crisp block.
WORDS The words for the cards were written by Dr. Pence with utmost intentionality, and the nature of the product called for a calm and contemplative type treatment. So, the copy collected for each card was minimally rendered in a soft gray utilitarian typeface on plush white paper.
Regarding layout, the following system was used to further increase clarity and legibility: as the number of lines on each card increases, the number of characters in each line decreases.
For efficient manufacturing and assembly, the design consists of four simple parts that interlock, wedge together, and click into place.
To convey mobility, the box is elevated and made easy to lift from its resting position.
